Registration FAQ

Who can register?

  • A person who owns life insurance or an annuity on his or her own life.
  • An applicant. An applicant is an adult who owns life insurance or an annuity on a child. You can register even if you do not have a product for yourself, but you own a product on a child. You may be a grandparent who purchased life insurance for your grandchildren. See How to register if I am an applicant if you have problems registering.
  • A member who does not own life insurance or an annuity but who has purchased other products such as mutual funds. This type of registrant does not have access to view account information online and will be limited to ordering fraternal benefits.
  • An assignee. An assignee is an individual owner of a certificate that has been absolutely assigned. Because of privacy concerns, certificates with multiple owners will not be accessible on the member website. Co-owners will not be able to register for the member websites.
  •

Who can't register?

  • An owner or the insured on a certificate that has been absolutely assigned to a business or a trust.
  • A co-owner of a certificate that has been absolutely assigned to more than one person.
  • A child less than 16 years of age.
  • A parent for a child who owns a certificate. An individual may be the owner of a certificate starting at age 16. If the certificate was taken out before the child turned 16, the applicant will normally remain owner of the certificate until the 21st birthday of the insured or annuitant. However, the applicant can elect to release control to the child between the ages of 16 and 21.
  • Preferred Benefit Bank Account holders. This type of account is issued when a death benefit has been paid through the form of a checking account. We don't store information on the balance of the account at Modern Woodmen. Northern Trust is the bank that holds these accounts. Please contact them directly at (800) 343-2551 for account information.
  • Supplemental contract holders. This type of account results from receiving death proceeds as a beneficiary or from the maturity of an annuity/similar contract. It does not provide beneficial membership. For information about these accounts, please contact the Claim department at (800) 447-9811.
